Chapter Twenty-Eight

Susan opened her eyes, but unlike the first time she’d re-awoken today, she knew exactly where she was, and exactly what was going on.

The sun was intense. She could feel beads of sweat trickling down her sore forehead. There wasn’t a cloud in sight.

She was sitting back against something. A car, she assumed. There was a bloke standing in front of her, saying things to her, hand on her shoulder.

She blinked a few times, looked around, and fully awoke to the situation.

She’d passed out speaking to that woman on the road. It was what the woman said that got to her. The things she’d said about just how widespread this chaos was; just how bad this blackout was.

She hoped that when she woke up, opened her eyes, there’d already be some kind of power in place.

But looking at her surroundings, those hopes were falsely placed.

“You had a funny turn,” the bloke said. His voice was high-pitched and soft. “We brought you over here to take a proper look at you. Looks like you had a nasty bump to the head someplace. And you’re probably extremely dehydrated, too. Keep an eye on yourself, and we will too. At least until help gets here.”

Susan looked closer at this man. She saw the smile on his narrow face. Asian. Kind eyes. She listened to the way he spoke with such an authoritative but caring tone, and she got the sense right away that this guy was a doctor.

She looked to her right. Saw cars were open. People lying inside them, flat.

“What—what’re you doing here?”

“We can’t get people to the hospital right now. There’s a lot of people in a lot of bad conditions. The best we can do is look out for them until outside help comes. And it will. We have to believe it will.”

He tutted, then. Shook his head. Offered out his hand.

“Sorry. How rude. Allow me to introduce myself. I’m Doctor Khalil.”

Susan took his hand, somewhat reluctantly. She was thirsty, that was for sure, but otherwise, she felt okay. Or at least relatively okay considering she’d found herself caught up in a plane crash, survived it to watch her friends die, and then walked all this way over here. “Susan,” she said.

“Susan,” Doctor Khalil repeated. “Now like I say. You need to take a drink and take a rest. But otherwise, as long as you aren’t showing any other symptoms… we think you could be of good use here.”

Susan frowned. “Good use?”

Doctor Khalil sighed. “As you can see, we’ve got a lot of people in bad situations, and not enough people to look after them. That’s what they need. Someone to hold their hands. Someone to give them food and water. Someone to reassure them, and in some cases… well. As much as we hate to admit it, someone to help them go through their final moments in as little distress as possible. It’s the least we can do for people; like I say, until help arrives.”

Susan felt a combination of emotions.
